The Gila Wilderness, the first designated wilderness in the U.S., contains over 550,000 acres. The wilderness is buffered on all sides by the Gila National Forest (3.3 million acres) and interconnected with the Aldo Leopold Wilderness, Blue Range Wilderness and the Apache National Forest. With elevation ranges from 4,000 to 11,000 feet, the mountains, mesas, canyons, rivers and streams make this a major center for outdoor recreation.
